Born on March 26, 1944 in Oblong, IL., he was the son of Samuel Otho and Lucile (Leggitt) Allen.  Sammy was a graduate of Oblong High School class of 1961; a 1965 graduate from the University of Evansville, IN.; the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1970 and interned at the Animal Medical Center in New York City.

Dr. Allen founded the Northwest Animal Hospital in 1975 and practiced general medicine, as well as his specialty of dermatology and allergy.  He served on many veterinary boards and was president of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, as well as the Affilliated Emergency Veterinary Service.  He was a member of the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology and the Academy of Veterinary Allergy.  In 1998, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association.

Sammy was active in his church and his community as a sponsor of youth sports teams and Chamber of Commerce activities.  He loved gourmet food, fine wine, gardening, travel, and Lake Minnetonka.

On August 17, 1968 he married Janis (Jan) Bierod and she survivies.  He was a wonderful husband to his wife for 45 years, and proud father to his beloved children, Samantha and Kirk.  He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Garold Sholders, nieces Diana and Ocie Smith, Janice and Kerry Travis, all of Oblong, IL.; his in-laws Harold and Norma Bierod, Ron and Betty Bierod, Barbara and Michael Moore, Bryan and Tina Bierod; and many cousins.  His other two “not-so-brilliant” children were Tony, a tabby and Chumley, a Jack Russell Terrier.
